Cooker and oven lower element failures are usually pretty easy to diagnose as, the oven will only partially heat or not heat up as it should do.

Often you will also find that the lower or base oven element will be found only in static ovens (i.e. not fan driven) on a multi-function oven. Most often these base elements work in conjunction with other heating elements in the appliance to provide an even spread of heat throughout the cooking cavity.

In general many lower base heating elements can be a bit tricky to change, some are just downright awkward! It is therefore advised only for those with some good DIY skills and understanding. In almost all cases the oven, if it is a built in model, will need to be removed from the housing and panels removed to change the lower element. This is often not a job for novices but with patience it can be done.

You will require, as always when working on electrical appliances such as ovens and cookers, to isolate the appliance from the mains power for safety. Whatever you do, do not work on a cooker or oven that is live as it is highly dangerous to do so.

Base elements can also, like many other spare parts, be the victim of cheap and poor quality quality parts which fail sooner if they work at all and also be poorly constructed making them harder to fit. That being said there are sometimes good quality compatible elements available if it is a common heating element or, it commonly fails.
